I recently took a trip with a friend I have known for over 40 years. Our travel time together requires little effort; we seem to blend and adapt seamlessly to every situation we encounter. Without cue, we know when to laugh, cry or call it a day.
Our history entails a long list of good times intermingled with the bad and ugly that life randomly throws our way. We have lost parents, family and friends over the years. My friend has watched my daughter grow into adulthood; she has given support in my failures and never fails to applaud my moments of triumphant. To me, she is a friend in all seasons of my life.
We all need a friend that hangs in there when life overwhelms us; someone who rejoices in our good time; but, doesn’t abandon ship when life plunges us into deep waters. No one wants a friend who dismounts the saddle when the sun goes down. True friends are in it for the long haul.
Several things come to mind when proclaiming someone to be a best friend. They are there when life is falling apart, or when there is exciting news to share. They listen, encourage and forgive. They are “A friend who loves at all times…” Proverbs 17:17 Jesus is that kind of friend.
Jesus listens
“In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation.” Psalm 5:3.
Jesus encourages
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11.
Jesus loves
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
Jesus never leaves us
“He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you?” Deuteronomy 31:8
Jesus desires companionship
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me.” Revelation 3:20
When my Daddy was living, he said, “If you have three lifelong friends, consider it a gift. I am fortunate to have more than three; even more fortunate that Jesus is tops on my BFF list. I pray you are fortunate enough to have best friends you love and trust; and most of all, have Jesus on your BFF list.
I agree with your Dad – 3 BFF’s is a wealth in itself!!
