The Placebo Gospel

My heart grieves whenever I listen to talk or see online posts that make heaven seems placebolike it’s guaranteed on the basis of ‘I believe in Jesus’. Even the demons and Satan believe in Jesus and we all know their final destiny.

“Not everyone who calls me their Lord will get into the kingdom of heaven. Only the ones who obey my Father in heaven will get in. On the Day of Judgment many will call me their Lord… But I will tell them, “I will have nothing to do with you! Get out of my sight, you evil people!”
Matthew 7: 21-23

We are living in a liberal generation where we embrace a ‘placebo’ gospel that fits our agenda. We conveniently forget that word “obedience’ and replace it with a compliance to and acceptance of this world’s standard of right/wrong. We have become comfortable with rewrites and misinterpretations of scripture in order to fit the placebo gospel of current political platforms.

How convenient.

It might behoove you to forego your political platform and instead reevaluate your spiritual platform because that’s the standard by which you will be judged. God’s Word doesn’t shift or change based on your passing agenda. If God calls it sin, then it is still sin; and no matter how much you plead your case before Him at the final judgement, you will lose. God’s Word is unchanging.

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” Isaiah 40:8

Let me be ‘Debbie Downer’ here

As much as we want to believe, not everyone we love is going to heaven when they die. If you have no real commitment or investment to God or do not live according His Word, well it’s not looking good for you on the eternal side.

Like I mentioned before, even Satan and his demons believe in God and Jesus. It’s not only about believing and accepting Jesus into your life; it’s also about change and accepting God’s Word at face value. That’s the part most don’t like to hear. We’d rather interpret God’s Word to fit an agenda that befitting to the ways of this world.

God’s Word clearly speaks against so many things that this generation embraces.

Don’t be fooled

“Be sure of this. In the last days hard times will come.

People will love themselves. They will love money. They will talk about themselves and be proud. They will say wrong things about people. They will not obey their parents. They will not be thankful. They will not keep anything holy.

They will have no love. They will not agree with anybody. They will tell lies about people. They will have no self-control. They will beat people. They will not love anything that is good.

They cannot be trusted. They will act quickly, without thinking. They are proud of themselves. They love to have fun more than they love God.

They act as if they worshiped God, yet they do not let God’s power work in their lives…”

ll Timothy 2: 3-5

Timothy wasn’t just talking about the world of unbelievers, but also those who call themselves ‘believers’.  It’s happening within our churches today where a placebo version of the gospel is being delivered and it’s conveniently being embraced as the norm because it requires you do nothing more than to believe Jesus died on the cross for your sins.

Time to wake up

“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it.” Matthew 7:13-14

Being a Christian and believer in Christ is a lifestyle that transforms us. It’s a one on one relationship with God and His Son Jesus. It means we read our Bible daily, seek the desires and intents of God’s purpose for our life.

If we don’t get the full strength of God’s Word, we could be deceived into thinking we’re headed toward the narrow gate when we’re actually on the road to destruction. Likewise, the devil is mass-distributing a watered-down version among God’s people. He’s content to let you go to some churches because the message preached is often so diluted it won’t make any transforming difference in your life.

TODAY’S PRAYER:

Heavenly Father-

Am I just pretending to be someone who believes in you, or am I making efforts to be committed to serving you? Your Word tells me that those who will get into Heaven must be obedient to you. Help me search your scripture to learn the true gospel that requires a life-changing transformation.

Bring me to a place where I re-evaluate my spiritual platform and align it to the scripture by which I will be judged. I don’t want to just mouth that I know you; I want TO KNOW YOU in a personal and live-changing way.

AMEN

  1. What a powerful post, Denise. Thanks for the courage to share these thoughts and especially to include the Scriptures that present Truth to those who may not be walking with Him yet. I love your boldness and strong faith.
